Bard is a descendant of King Girion of Dale and appears in "The Hobbit", when Smaug attacks Lake-town. Known as Bard the Bowman, he earned fame as a skilled archer, and was the honorable captain of the guard of Esgaroth. He grew up, being very pessimistic and grim, and humans believed he attracted bad luck.

Bard is a proud, grim man descended from Girion, Lord of Dale. (Dale was a wealthy city in the old days, before Smaug came and destroyed it.) He's the one who first realizes that Smaug has come to attack Lake-town, and is the guy who speaks to the thrush about the weak point in Smaug's underbelly that Bilbo discovered.

Bard and the Elvenking are amazed that the hobbit would risk inciting the anger of the dwarves in order to prevent a war. They ask him to stay in the camp for his safety, but Bilbo decides to return to the mountain.

In both J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Peter Jackson's trilogy of film adaptations, Bard the Bowman saved Lake-town from the great dragon Smaug. Bard was a descendant of Girion , who was the Lord of Dale when Smaug destroyed the city almost two hundred years before the events of The Hobbit .
